I Didn't Start a Travel Business — I Lived One

In 2021, just weeks after Mexico reopened to the world following Covid, I spent 14 nights between Sandos Caracol and Sandos Playacar in the Riviera Maya. The resorts were operating at roughly 50% capacity — I was there during the second month after reopening. Then we went whale shark swimming. This was May, which in hindsight was stupid because the whale sharks were hauling ass through the water and we were trying to chase them and swim alongside them while they were moving at full speed. September would have been a completely different, calmer encounter. But even so — swimming in open water next to a 40-foot whale shark is something that rewires your brain about what’s possible.
