Cancún Airport Transfer Guide — Your Options, Compared
You just landed at Cancún International Airport (CUN). You’ve cleared customs, grabbed your bags, and walked into the arrivals hall. Now what?
This is the most common question from first-time visitors to the Riviera Maya, and it’s a legitimate one. CUN can be overwhelming — the moment you exit, you’re approached by shuttle operators, taxi drivers, and yes, people trying to sell you things that have nothing to do with transportation.
Here’s what you actually need to know, and how to get to your resort without overpaying or getting lost.
Option 1: Private Transfer (Seek & Go)
Best for: Couples, families, groups, anyone who wants zero hassle
Seek & Go is the official in-house transportation company at Sandos resorts. They operate private branded vans with professional drivers who meet you in the arrivals hall with a name sign.
You walk out of customs, find your driver, hand off your luggage, and ride directly to your resort door. No stops, no other passengers, no negotiating.
Pricing from CUN Airport
| Destination | One-Way | Round-Trip | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancún Hotel Zone | ~$74–$122 | ~$148–$244 | Up to 10 pax |
| Playa del Carmen | $122–$220 | $244–$418 | Up to 10 pax |
| Playa del Carmen (large) | $220 | $418 | Up to 16 pax |
| Puerto Morelos | $80 | $150 | Up to 10 pax |
| Tulum | $200 | $400 | Up to 10 pax |
| Puerto Juárez (Isla Mujeres ferry) | $74 | $148 | Up to 10 pax |
| Costa Mujeres | $90 | — | Up to 10 pax |
Per-person math: A $122 transfer to Playa del Carmen split among 4 people is about $30 each — barely more than the ADO bus, and you’re dropped at your hotel door with luggage service.
How to book: WhatsApp Seek & Go at +52 984 152 4671 with your flight details, number of passengers, and destination. Book before your trip for guaranteed pickup.
Option 2: ADO Bus
Best for: Solo budget travelers comfortable navigating on their own
ADO is Mexico’s long-distance bus system. Clean, air-conditioned coaches run from CUN airport to Playa del Carmen and other destinations. It’s the cheapest option.
Pricing: Approximately $5–15 USD depending on destination and class.
The catch:
- Buses run on a schedule — you may wait 30–60 minutes for the next departure
- The bus drops you at the ADO bus station in Playa del Carmen, not your hotel
- From the bus station, you’ll need a taxi to your resort (another $5–10 USD)
- Luggage is your responsibility — no porter, no help, tight overhead compartments
- During peak season, buses can be full
- No direct service to most hotel zone properties in Cancún
Verdict: Fine for solo travelers with a backpack. Impractical for families, anyone with multiple suitcases, or anyone who wants to go directly to their hotel.
Option 3: Airport Taxi
Best for: Spontaneous travelers who want a private ride and don’t mind paying premium
Official airport taxis operate from a counter inside the arrivals hall. You tell them your destination, pay at the counter, and get assigned a driver.
Approximate pricing:
- CUN to Cancún Hotel Zone: $40–$60 USD
- CUN to Playa del Carmen: $80–$120+ USD
- CUN to Tulum: $120–$180+ USD
The catch:
- Rates are generally higher than pre-booked private transfers
- Limited to 4 passengers with standard luggage in most vehicles
- Quality and vehicle condition varies
- No guarantee of English-speaking driver
- Outside the official taxi counter, unofficial operators may approach you — stick to the official counter
Verdict: Reasonable for the Cancún Hotel Zone. Expensive for Playa del Carmen and points south. For groups of 2+, a Seek & Go private transfer is usually cheaper and more comfortable.
Option 4: Rental Car
Best for: Independent travelers planning multiple day trips during their stay
Several rental agencies operate at CUN airport. If you plan to explore beyond your resort on your own schedule, a rental car gives you maximum flexibility.
What to know:
- Mexican car insurance is mandatory — your US or Canadian auto policy does not cover you in Mexico
- Insurance adds $15–30+ per day to the rental cost
- Gas stations (PEMEX) are plentiful but accept pesos; some take cards
- The main highway (307) between Cancún and Tulum is well-maintained
- Speed bumps (topes) are aggressive and often unmarked — hit one at speed and you’ll feel it
- Parking at resorts is typically free
- If you’re staying at an all-inclusive and don’t plan to leave the resort daily, the rental cost adds up fast for something you’ll barely use
Verdict: Worth it if you’re the type who wants to explore independently — drive to cenotes, stop at roadside restaurants, visit Cobá on a whim. Not worth it if you’re staying at an all-inclusive and doing organized excursions.
The Bottom Line
For most Sandos resort guests, the decision tree is simple:
Flying into CUN → Staying at Sandos Cancún? Private transfer to the Cancún Hotel Zone. From ~$74 one-way. You’re at your resort in 25 minutes.
Flying into CUN → Staying at Sandos Playacar or Sandos Caracol? Private transfer to Playa del Carmen. From $122 one-way. You’re at your resort in about an hour. For groups of 4+, the per-person cost is under $30 — essentially bus prices with hotel-door service.
Flying into CUN → Heading to Tulum? Private transfer or consider whether the new Tulum Airport (TQO) has flights from your city. TQO cuts the drive time significantly.
The smartest move is booking your airport transfer at the same time you book your excursions — through the Seek & Go desk, either in advance via WhatsApp or in your resort lobby.
Also: The New Tulum Airport (TQO)
Tulum’s new international airport (code: TQO) is now operational. If you’re staying in the southern Riviera Maya, TQO may be a shorter drive than CUN. Seek & Go already operates transfer routes from TQO.
