How to Get from Cancún to Playa del Carmen
Whether you’re heading from the Cancún Hotel Zone to Playa del Carmen for dinner, transferring between Sandos Cancún and Sandos Playacar, or just exploring the coast — you have several options, each with different tradeoffs on price, speed, and convenience.
The distance is about 42 miles (68 km) along Highway 307. Drive time is 50–70 minutes depending on traffic and your starting point within Cancún.
Option 1: Seek & Go Private Transfer
Best for: Groups of 2+, families with luggage, anyone who wants door-to-door service
Seek & Go operates private branded vans between Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Your driver picks you up at your hotel and drops you at your destination — no stops, no other passengers.
| Service | Capacity | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| One-way | Up to 10 passengers | $122–$220 |
| Round-trip | Up to 10 passengers | $244–$418 |
| One-way | Up to 16 passengers | $220 |
| Round-trip | Up to 16 passengers | $418 |
Per-person math: A $122 transfer split among 4 people is about $30 each. Among 6, it’s $20 each. At that point, it’s cheaper than a taxi and more comfortable than the bus.
How to book: WhatsApp +52 984 152 4671 or at the Seek & Go desk in your Sandos lobby.
Option 2: ADO Bus
Best for: Solo budget travelers who are comfortable navigating on their own
ADO is Mexico’s intercity bus system. Air-conditioned coaches run frequently between the Cancún bus terminal (downtown, near the Hotel Zone) and Playa del Carmen’s bus station on 5th Avenue.
Price: Approximately $5–12 USD depending on class (regular or ADO GL first-class).
Frequency: Departures roughly every 15–30 minutes during the day.
Travel time: About 60–75 minutes.
The catch:
- The Cancún bus terminal is downtown, not in the Hotel Zone — you’ll need a taxi from your hotel to the station (another $5–10 USD)
- Drops you at the Playa del Carmen bus station, not your hotel
- Luggage is your responsibility
- No Wi-Fi on most routes
- Standing passengers during peak hours
True cost from Hotel Zone: Bus fare ($8) + taxi to Cancún bus terminal ($8) + taxi from PDC station to hotel ($5) = approximately $21 per person. For a solo traveler, that’s still cheaper than a private transfer. For a couple, the math favors Seek & Go.
Option 3: Taxi
Best for: Spontaneous travel when you don’t want to wait for a bus or pre-book
Taxis are available outside most hotels and at designated stands.
Approximate pricing:
- Cancún Hotel Zone to Playa del Carmen: $60–$100+ USD
- Negotiation is expected — agree on price before getting in
- Some hotels can arrange a fixed-rate taxi
The catch:
- Most expensive per-trip option for solo or duo travelers
- Quality and vehicle condition varies wildly
- No guaranteed English-speaking driver
- Metered taxis are rare for inter-city trips — it’s negotiated pricing
- For groups of 4+, a Seek & Go transfer is typically cheaper and definitely more comfortable
Option 4: Colectivo
Best for: Adventurous budget travelers who want the local experience
Colectivos are shared passenger vans that run a fixed route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen. They depart when full (usually quickly during the day) from designated stops.
Price: Approximately $2–4 USD per person.
The experience: You climb into a van with 10–15 other people, your knees touching the person across from you, luggage on your lap or wedged under your seat. The driver makes stops along Highway 307 to pick up and drop off passengers. It’s authentic, it’s cheap, and it’s not for everyone.
The catch:
- Cramped seating, no air conditioning on some vans
- Multiple stops = longer travel time (75–90+ minutes)
- Drop-off points are highway-side, not your hotel
- Not practical with luggage beyond a small bag
- Finding the colectivo stop in Cancún requires local knowledge or asking around
Verdict: A fun cultural experience for backpackers. Not appropriate for resort guests with suitcases.
Option 5: Rental Car
Best for: Travelers who plan to explore the coast independently over multiple days
If you’ve already rented a car, the drive between Cancún and Playa del Carmen is straightforward — one highway (307), well-maintained, relatively easy navigation.
Cost: Gas only (maybe $5–8 USD for the trip), plus whatever you’re paying daily for the rental and mandatory Mexican insurance.
The catch:
- Toll highway (autopista) is faster but costs extra; free highway has more stops
- Speed bumps (topes) can be aggressive, especially through towns
- Parking in Playa del Carmen is limited and can require patience
- If you’re going for dinner or drinks, driving back isn’t ideal
The Recommendation
| Traveler | Best Option |
|---|---|
| Solo backpacker | ADO bus or colectivo |
| Solo traveler with luggage | ADO bus (first class) |
| Couple | Seek & Go private transfer |
| Family (3–5 people) | Seek & Go private transfer |
| Group (6–10 people) | Seek & Go private transfer (per-person cost drops below $20) |
| Day trip explorer | Rental car (if you already have one) |
For most Sandos guests — couples and families — the Seek & Go private transfer is the move. Door-to-door service, predictable pricing, no figuring out bus schedules or haggling with taxi drivers.
