Everything you need to know about planning a destination wedding in Mexico — legal requirements, costs, venue types, guest logistics, and why all-inclusive resorts make it easier than you think.

Mexico hosts more destination weddings than any other country in the Western Hemisphere outside the United States. The reasons are practical: direct flights from most US and Canadian cities, no visa required for Americans or Canadians, a favorable exchange rate that stretches your budget, and natural venues — beaches, cenotes, clifftops, tropical gardens — that would cost a fortune to replicate anywhere else.

The all-inclusive resort model makes it even more attractive. One venue handles your ceremony, reception, catering, drinks, accommodations, and coordination. Your guests get an all-inclusive vacation. You get a wedding without juggling 15 separate vendors. This guide covers everything you need to plan a destination wedding in Mexico, from legal requirements to timelines to choosing the right venue.

How All-Inclusive Wedding Packages Work

The concept is straightforward: the resort provides everything for your wedding as a bundled package, and your guests book their rooms at all-inclusive rates that cover their food, drinks, and accommodations for their entire stay.

Wedding packages at Sandos resorts are structured in three tiers:

Dreamcatcher — $6,499 for 30 guests at all four resorts (tax and service included). Extra guests $100. Includes ceremony setup, private dinner reception with open bar (3 hours; 4 hours at Cancún), wedding cake, basic floral arrangements, wedding coordinator, and honeymoon amenities (welcome suite amenities, romantic turndown with rose petals and candles, breakfast in bed, romantic dinner for two, early check-in/late check-out subject to availability). Dreamcatcher does not include a cocktail hour.

Sweet Romance — $7,499 for 30 guests. Extra guests $110. Everything in Dreamcatcher plus a one-hour cocktail hour with bar, upgraded floral arrangements, enhanced décor, and additional wedding party amenities.

Seaside Bliss — $8,499 for 30 guests. Extra guests $120. The premium package: cocktail hour with bar and appetizers, plus the most extensive décor, floral work, and reception enhancements.

Every package also includes: 2 complimentary 1st-anniversary nights at the host hotel, valid from one month after the wedding through 12 months (subject to availability); 1 semi-private welcome dinner at the main buffet for up to 20 guests at 6:00 p.m. (subject to availability).

Cancún is no longer $1,000 more on the package. All four resorts share these July 2026 prices. Cancún still includes a one-wedding-per-day policy, a guaranteed suite upgrade, a menu tasting for two, getting-ready amenities, and the 4-hour reception (other resorts stay at 3 hours).

Legal Requirements for Getting Married in Mexico

If you want your Mexico ceremony to be legally recognized, here is what you need:

Arrival timing. The couple must arrive at least 4 working days before the wedding date. This is non-negotiable — Mexican law requires it for the legal paperwork to process.

Documentation. Valid passports for both parties. Original birth certificates (some municipalities require apostilled copies — your wedding coordinator will advise based on the specific location). If either party was previously married, certified divorce decrees or death certificates are required.

Blood test and medical certificate. This must be done in Mexico — the resort’s wedding coordinator arranges it. The test checks blood type, HIV, and STD screening. Results are typically ready in 24-48 hours. This is a legal requirement, not optional.

Witnesses. Four witnesses are required for the legal ceremony. If you do not have four guests who can serve, the resort can provide witnesses at $30 USD each.

Legal ceremony cost. $2,100 at Sandos Playacar, Caracol, and Finisterra. $2,500 at Sandos Cancún. This covers the judge, legal documentation, and government processing. It is separate from your wedding package price.

The easier alternative. Many couples choose a symbolic ceremony at the resort and handle the legal marriage at home beforehand (a quick courthouse ceremony or license signing). This eliminates the blood test, the 4-day arrival requirement, and the legal ceremony fee. Your Mexico celebration is the real wedding in every way that matters — the legal paperwork is just handled separately. This is the most popular approach, and your wedding coordinator can help you plan both.

Choosing Your Venue Type

The venue sets the tone for everything. Sandos resorts offer four distinct venue types across their properties:

Beach ceremonies. Sand, ocean, waves in the background. Undeniably romantic. Practical considerations: sand and heels do not mix well (barefoot or wedge shoes recommended), wind can affect hairstyles and veils, and sound systems need to overcome the ocean. Note: at Sandos Cancún, beach venues close at 9 PM during turtle nesting season (May–October) and 11 PM outside nesting season.

Terrace and rooftop ceremonies. Solid surface, panoramic views, less weather dependency. The rooftop terrace at Sandos Cancún accommodates up to 300 guests with 360-degree Caribbean views. The mountaintop terrace at Sandos Finisterra overlooks the Pacific Ocean and Cabo San Lucas marina — one of the most dramatic wedding backdrops in Mexico.

Garden ceremonies. Lush tropical landscaping, natural shade, intimate atmosphere. Sandos Playacar’s garden venue sits within the Playacar community’s manicured grounds. Grass surface means heels work fine.

Cenote ceremonies. This is unique to the Riviera Maya. Sandos Caracol has a cenote wedding venue — a wooden platform in a jungle setting beside a natural sinkhole — that seats up to 80 guests. There is nothing like it anywhere else. If you want a wedding venue that makes your guests stop and stare before you even walk down the aisle, this is it.

Guest Logistics — The 80% Rule

At least 80% of your wedding guests must be staying at the host resort. This is standard across the all-inclusive wedding industry, not just Sandos. Non-resort guests can attend with a day pass (additional fee arranged through the wedding coordinator).

Planning for realistic attendance

Send save-the-dates 8-12 months before the wedding. International travel requires more lead time than a local event. Expect a 60-70% acceptance rate — destination weddings naturally filter your guest list. Some people cannot take the time off, some cannot afford the trip, and some will decline for other reasons. Plan your package size and room block around realistic numbers, not your full invite list.

Room blocks

Book a room block early through the resort. Your guests book their own rooms at the resort’s group rate. Guest room costs are separate from your wedding package — guests pay for their own accommodations. A $1,000 / $2,000 room-block discount is not on the current July 2026 flyer and must be confirmed with Sandos if offered at all.

Budgeting Your Destination Wedding

Your total cost breaks down into these components:

Wedding package — $6,499 / $7,499 / $8,499 depending on tier (same at all four resorts). This covers ceremony, reception, catering, open bar, cake, flowers, coordinator, honeymoon amenities, two complimentary 1st-anniversary nights, and a semi-private welcome dinner for up to 20.

Legal ceremony (if applicable) — $2,100 to $2,500. Skip this if you are doing a symbolic ceremony with legal marriage at home.

Extras — Professional photographer, videographer, upgraded floral arrangements, DJ or live music upgrade, additional décor beyond what the package includes, hair and makeup for the bridal party. These are quoted individually by the resort’s wedding department.

Room block discounts — A $1,000 / $2,000 room-block discount is not on the current July 2026 flyer and must be confirmed with Sandos if offered at all.

What guests pay. Guest room costs are separate. Guests book at the resort’s group rate, which covers their all-inclusive stay (room, food, drinks, entertainment). Room rates vary by resort, room category, and season.

For a rough total: a Dreamcatcher package ($6,499) plus legal ceremony ($2,100) plus a photographer ($800-$1,500) puts a 30-guest legal wedding in the $9,400–$10,100 range before extras. A symbolic ceremony drops the legal fee entirely. Compare that to the average US wedding cost of $35,000+ and the value proposition is clear.

Specialty Ceremonies

Sandos resorts welcome diverse celebrations:

LGBTQ+ weddings. All four Sandos properties are IGLTA (International LGBTQ+ Travel Association) members. Legal and symbolic ceremonies are available for all couples at every resort.

South Asian weddings. Sangeet, Mehndi, Baraat procession, Hindu ceremony — all available at all four properties. The resorts have experience coordinating multi-day celebration sequences with the specific cultural requirements involved.

Mayan spiritual ceremony. A traditional Mayan blessing led by a shaman. Available as a standalone ceremony or in addition to your legal or symbolic wedding.

Green Wedding at Sandos Caracol. A $780 add-on (must be verified with Sandos — not listed on the July 2026 flyer) that adds: live Mayan drum music, a private plant-a-tree ceremony (your tree grows on the resort grounds), a romantic boat ride through the resort’s waterways, and a temazcal ritual — a traditional Mayan sweat lodge purification ceremony. This is unique to Caracol’s eco-resort identity and adds a meaningful, only-in-Mexico element to your celebration.

Choosing Your Destination

Each Sandos resort offers a different wedding personality:

Sandos Cancún — Sophisticated and Exclusive

Adults-only. One wedding per day. Rooftop terrace for up to 300 guests. Four-hour reception (longest of any Sandos resort). Guaranteed suite upgrade for the couple. Beach and penthouse terrace venues for up to 50 guests each.

Best for: Couples who want a sophisticated, child-free celebration with guaranteed exclusivity. The one-wedding-per-day policy means the resort’s attention is entirely on your event.

Sandos Playacar — Family-Friendly and Festive

Beach, garden, and lobby terrace venues. Up to 100 guests at beach and garden. Steps from Playa del Carmen’s 5th Avenue nightlife for post-reception celebrations. Family-friendly — kids are welcome.

Best for: Large weddings with families and children. The garden venue offers a solid-surface alternative to the beach. Proximity to 5th Avenue means your guests have plenty to do before and after the wedding.

Sandos Caracol — Nature-Forward and Unique

The only resort with a cenote wedding venue (up to 80 guests on a wooden platform in a jungle setting). Also offers beach (100 guests), rooftop terrace (100 guests), and the intimate Mapache Deck (50 guests). Green Wedding add-on available. Eco-resort atmosphere.

Best for: Nature-loving couples who want a venue that does not exist anywhere else on earth. The cenote ceremony is the most photographed wedding venue in the Sandos network.

Sandos Finisterra — Dramatic and Adventurous

Mountaintop terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Cabo San Lucas marina. Beach venue on the Pacific shore. Plaza Finisterra for ceremony-only events (closes 7 PM). Up to 100 guests at each venue.

Best for: Couples who want a dramatic setting with Pacific sunsets, mountain views, and walking-distance access to Cabo San Lucas marina nightlife. The mountaintop terrace sunset photos are spectacular.

Timeline — When to Start Planning

12-18 months before: Choose your destination and resort. Book your venue and select your package tier. Secure your wedding date.

8-12 months before: Send save-the-dates. Book your room block. Start legal paperwork research if having a legal ceremony in Mexico.

6-8 months before: Menu tastings (can be arranged during a pre-wedding visit or virtually). Finalize décor decisions. Begin collecting RSVPs. Book photographer, videographer, and any extras.

3-6 months before: Final guest count adjustments. Seating arrangements. Finalize timeline with wedding coordinator. Book flights for the wedding party.

1 month before: Final headcount to the resort. Confirm all vendor arrangements. Send final timeline to wedding party and key guests.

4 days before wedding: Arrive at the resort. Complete legal requirements (blood test, documentation) if having a legal ceremony. Meet your coordinator in person. Walk through the venue. Relax.
