Mexico Resort Airport Guide: Cancún & Los Cabos Arrivals Made Simple
Complete airport guide for Cancún International (CUN) and Los Cabos International (SJD) — what's included in your SandosPromo package, immigration tips, return transfers, and what to expect.
March 28, 2026
Arriving at a Mexican airport for the first time can feel overwhelming—new country, new language, new customs lines. But it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re landing in Cancún to enjoy Sandos Cancún, Sandos Caracol, or Sandos Playacar, or heading to the Pacific coast for Sandos Finisterra, this guide walks you through exactly what to expect—and what’s already taken care of for you.
The good news: your vacation club package includes ground transfer to your resort. The better news: knowing what’s included, what’s not, and how to handle immigration, customs, and return logistics ahead of time makes your arrival smooth and stress-free.
What’s Included in Your SandosPromo Package
Your vacation club stay at any Sandos resort includes one-way airport-to-resort transfer. This is a major perk—airport transfers elsewhere can cost $75–150 per person. Your package covers it.
What that means in practice:
- You land, clear immigration and customs, and exit the airport.
- Someone is waiting for you with a sign bearing your name.
- You’re driven directly to your resort (no other stops, no detours).
- The drive is comfortable and takes 12–55 minutes depending on which Sandos you’re visiting.
Important: You must schedule this transfer in advance. The resort needs at least 15 days’ notice to arrange your arrival transport. Contact them by phone:
- US & Canada: 844-366-8385
- International: +52 998 193 3492
Have your flight details, resort name, and arrival date ready. This is one call well worth making before you fly.
Return transfer is NOT included. We cover this in detail below, but know upfront: you’ll need to arrange your trip back to the airport yourself. Options range from affordable ($12 USD) to premium, and we’ll walk through all of them.
Cancún International Airport (CUN) — For Sandos Cancún, Caracol, and Playacar
Cancún International Airport serves the Riviera Maya and is the gateway to Sandos Cancún, Sandos Caracol, and Sandos Playacar.
Terminal Layout & Getting Through Fast
Cancún Airport has four terminals. Most flights from the US arrive at Terminal 3, though always check your boarding pass. Terminals are connected, so if you somehow arrive elsewhere, it’s not a crisis—just a longer walk.
Immigration & Customs
After landing, follow signs to immigration. Here’s what happens:
Immigration line: A Mexican official will ask you basic questions—where are you staying, how long, why you’re here. Have your passport ready and answer honestly. They’ll issue a Tourist Card (FMM). Keep this card with you at all times. You’ll need it to leave Mexico. Losing it means a hassle at departure and a potential fine.
Baggage claim: Grab your luggage.
Customs: You’ll see a red light and a green light. Press the button. Green light means go. Red light means they want to inspect your bags. This is random, not personal—most people get green.
After Customs—Important Warning
As you exit customs, you may see people offering “tourism information” or “assistance.” Do not stop. These are timeshare sales kiosks disguised as helpful desks. They’re not affiliated with airports; they’re vacation club sales operations. They’ll try to get you to sit down, listen to a presentation, or provide contact information. Politely say no and keep walking.
Your resort transfer driver will be waiting with your name on a sign. Find them and go directly to your car.
Drive Times to Your Resort
From Cancún Airport to:
- Sandos Cancún: 15 miles | 12–15 minutes
- Sandos Caracol: 40 miles | 45 minutes
- Sandos Playacar: 42 miles | 55 minutes
The drive is scenic—highway north to the Caribbean coast, then south along Highway 307 toward Playa del Carmen. You’ll see the transition from urban Cancún to beach resort towns to jungle.
Return Options from Cancún Area
Since your return transfer isn’t included, here are your realistic options:
Seek & Go Riviera Maya ($75–100 USD) The easiest premium option. Professional, English-speaking drivers, pick up directly from your resort. Seek & Go Riviera Maya offers reliable private transfer service. Book 24 hours in advance.
Resort Concierge ($30–60 USD) Most Sandos resorts can arrange a shared shuttle back to the airport. It’s cheaper and convenient, though you may wait for other guests. Ask at the front desk 1–2 days before departure.
ADO Bus (~$12 USD) The most budget-friendly option. ADO is Mexico’s national bus company, reliable and comfortable. Buses depart from Playa del Carmen (about 5 miles from Sandos Playacar) directly to Cancún Airport. Journey is about 60 minutes. You can buy tickets at the ADO ticket window in Playa del Carmen or online. This is genuinely a good option—buses are clean, air-conditioned, and direct.
Taxi or Uber/InDriver Taxis are available but negotiate the price before getting in. Uber and InDriver (a Latin American rideshare app) work in the Playa del Carmen area and offer transparent pricing. Budget $40–70 depending on your exact resort location.

Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) — For Sandos Finisterra
Los Cabos International Airport (airport code SJD, named after the nearby town of San José del Cabo) is smaller and simpler than Cancún, serving the Pacific coast and Sandos Finisterra.
What to Expect
The airport is modern, less crowded than Cancún, and easier to navigate. Most US flights land here, and you’ll clear immigration and customs much faster.
Immigration & Customs
The process is identical to Cancún:
- Immigration asks your business, where you’re staying, how long. Hand over your passport. Receive your Tourist Card. Keep it.
- Baggage claim.
- Customs—red/green light button.
- Exit to arrivals.
Same warning applies: avoid unsolicited “tourism assistance” desks.
Drive to Sandos Finisterra
From Los Cabos Airport to Sandos Finisterra: approximately 30 minutes to Cabo San Lucas where the resort is located. The drive is straightforward, mostly highway.
Return Options from Los Cabos
Seek & Go Los Cabos ($75–100 USD) The premium, reliable option. Seek & Go Los Cabos handles private transfers from your resort back to the airport. Book in advance.
Resort Concierge ($30–60 USD) Ask your Sandos Finisterra front desk to arrange shuttle service. Shared shuttles are available but less frequent than at Riviera Maya properties.
Taxi Taxis are available in Cabo San Lucas. Negotiate before entering. Uber does not operate as extensively in Los Cabos as in Cancún, but may be available depending on location.
Note: There is no equivalent bus service like ADO from Cabo San Lucas back to the airport, so your best budget option is a negotiated taxi or resort shuttle.
General Tips for Both Airports
Before You Leave Home
- Have your resort name, address, and phone number on your phone and written on paper. If your phone dies, you still have contact info.
- Know your flight times, especially departure time. Missing an international flight is expensive.
- If you’re planning to dive at your resort, remember that flying after diving is risky. Wait 18–24 hours after your last dive before flying—the altitude change can cause decompression sickness. Plan accordingly.
At the Airport
- Arrive 3 hours early for international departures. This is standard for Mexico and gives you breathing room.
- Bring a pen for the immigration form (Tourist Card). Pens aren’t provided, but staff may lend one.
- Have your passport and tourist card easily accessible.
Currency & Money
- Never exchange money at airport booths or kiosks. The rates are terrible—you’ll lose 10–15% of your value. Instead, withdraw pesos from an ATM past customs. ATMs offer much better exchange rates and charge a small fee rather than a percentage markup.
- Know your bank’s international withdrawal fees. Some charge $3–5 per transaction.
- Alternatively, travel with a small amount of pesos from home or exchange at your bank before the trip.
Cell Phone & Internet
- Your US cell plan likely won’t work, or will charge roaming fees. Consider a local SIM card. Telcel is Mexico’s main carrier. You can buy a prepaid SIM and small data plan at a kiosk in the airport, though rates are high. Many resorts offer free WiFi, so you may not need it.
- Some travelers buy a SIM online before departure for better rates.
Baggage Tips
- Carry on essentials (medication, valuables, important documents). Checked bags occasionally get delayed or misdirected.
- Pack light. You don’t need much for a resort vacation—the weather is warm, resorts provide most amenities.
Is Mexico Safe?
Yes. Cancún and Los Cabos airports are well-secured, and the Riviera Maya is one of Mexico’s safest and most-traveled regions. See Is Mexico Safe for Tourists? for a detailed breakdown.
What NOT to Do
Don’t Stop at “Tourism Information” Desks
These are vacation club sales operations, not airport services. They’ll offer you free gifts, discounted excursions, or special deals to sit down and listen to a presentation. The presentation is a sales pitch. Politely decline and keep walking. Your included transfer is all you need.
Don’t Exchange Money at Airport Booths
Rates are terrible. Use an ATM instead. You’ll get 10–15% better value.
Don’t Get in Unmarked or Unofficial Taxis
Use official taxi stands, Uber, or your arranged transfer. Unmarked cars are not safe.
Don’t Forget Your Tourist Card
Keep it in your passport. Losing it means hassle at departure and a potential fine. You’ll be asked for it when you leave.
Don’t Skip Scheduling Your Transfer
Call the resort at least 15 days before arrival. A missed transfer arrangement is a missed pickup, and you don’t want to scramble for ground transport on arrival day.
Don’t Assume Your Return Transfer Is Included
It’s not. Book it early—either with Seek & Go or your resort concierge. Don’t leave it for the day you depart.
Ready to arrive feeling confident? You now know exactly what to expect, what’s covered, and what to arrange. Your vacation club stay at a Sandos resort is set to start the moment you touch down. The airport is just the beginning—the real adventure waits at your beachfront resort.
Questions about your transfer or travel to Mexico? Contact your Sandos resort directly at 844-366-8385 (US) or +52 998 193 3492 (International). They’re there to help make your arrival seamless.
