How Much Does a Mexico Vacation Actually Cost? Full Budget Breakdown
Real cost breakdown for an all-inclusive Mexico vacation β flights, resort, excursions, spending money, and how promotional packages change the math completely.

The Three Buckets
Every Mexico vacation breaks down into three simple buckets, and understanding this framework will help you budget accurately no matter where you stay.
First: Getting there β your flights from home to Mexico.
Second: Staying there β your resort accommodation, which at all-inclusive properties includes meals, drinks, entertainment, and most activities.
Third: Doing stuff β excursions outside the resort, tips, shopping, spa services, and any meals or drinks off-property.
When you break it down this way, you can see where your money goes and where you have the most control over your costs.
Flights
Roundtrip airfare from major US cities to CancΓΊn typically runs $250β$500 per person. If you’re flying to Cabo (SJD), expect $300β$600 per person. These prices vary based on:
- Season: Peak winter months (DecemberβMarch) cost 30β40% more than summer or shoulder seasons.
- How far in advance you book: Book 6β8 weeks out for the best deals. Last-minute bookings often spike in price.
- Which airline: Budget carriers sometimes have lower base fares but add fees for bags and seat selection.
Where to book: We don’t book flights at SandosPromo β we leave that to you and the tools built for it. Use Google Flights, Skyscanner, or Kayak. Set price alerts and track fares for 4β6 weeks before your target dates.
Resort β Retail vs. Promotional
This is where promotional vacation packages make the biggest difference.
Retail Pricing (Hotels.com, Expedia, Booking.com)
A 5-night stay at Sandos properties through standard booking channels typically costs $200β$650 per night. For a family or couple:
- 5 nights at an average $400/night = $2,000
- 5 nights at premium beachfront = $3,250+
This covers your room and all-inclusive meals and drinks, but you’re paying retail rates.
Promotional Pricing (SandosPromo)
Our promotional vacation packages for Sandos Caracol, Sandos Playacar, Sandos Cancun Lifestyle Resort, and Sandos Papagayo offer 3β5 night packages for $435β$875 total. Not per night β total.
What’s included:
- All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, midnight snacks)
- All drinks (beer, wine, spirits, soft drinks, juice, coffee)
- Most entertainment and activities
- One-way airport transfer from your arrival airport
- Access to all resort facilities
The savings: $500β$2,400 per trip compared to retail pricing. The trade-off is straightforward: you attend a 90-minute resort presentation about the vacation club. Most guests who attend say it’s worth the discount alone.
Excursions
While your resort package covers a lot, most guests want to get off-property for at least one or two experiences. Here’s what typical excursions cost:
- Xcaret Park: $100β$150 per person (full day, eco-park with cenotes, beach, performances)
- ChichΓ©n ItzΓ‘: $80β$120 per person (guided tour, UNESCO World Heritage Site)
- Cenote tour: $50β$80 per person (swim in underground freshwater springs)
- Whale watching (Cabo): $60β$100 per person (seasonal, DecemberβApril)
- Sunset dinner cruise: $70β$120 per person (some resorts offer these cheaper through concierge)
- Snorkeling: $40β$70 per person (reef tour, usually 3β4 hours)
Budget planning: Most couples book 1β2 excursions. Families with kids often add one or two. Plan for $100β$300 per person if you’re the active traveler type. If you prefer to relax at the resort, your excursion cost is zero.
Spending Money
At an all-inclusive resort, you don’t need much cash. But most guests do spend money on:
- Tips: Housekeeping ($2β5 per day), server at dinner ($2β5), bartenders ($1 per drink). Standard practice. Budget: $50β100 for a week.
- Off-resort meals: Dinner in a nearby town, beach shack, local restaurant. Budget: $15β50 per meal per person.
- Shopping: Souvenirs, beachwear, jewelry, crafts at resort gift shop or local markets. Budget: $50β300 depending on your habits.
- Spa services: Massages, facials, body wraps. Most resorts charge $80β200+ for a 1-hour massage. Budget: $0β300 depending on interest.
- Return airport transfer: If you didn’t book it with your promotional package. Budget: $75β100 via shuttle services like Seek & Go.
- Miscellaneous: Phone calls (use WhatsApp on WiFi instead), extra drinks outside your package (rarely needed), tips for excursion guides.
Total spending money: $200β$500 for most guests on a 5-night trip.

Hidden Costs to Know About
A few line items don’t always jump out but are worth budgeting for:
- Mexican tourism tax: Usually $20β30 per person, sometimes already included in hotel rate or paid at checkout.
- Return airport transfer: If you book a round-trip transfer with your package, it’s covered. One-way back to the airport via shuttle runs $75β100.
- Resort deposit hold: When you check in, the resort places a $750 USD hold on your credit card as a security guarantee. This is not a charge β it’s released at checkout if you meet the terms of your stay (attend the required presentation, don’t cause damage, etc.). Your card needs $750 available credit. Debit cards are not accepted for this hold.
- Minibar, room safe, phone calls: Minibar is included in your all-inclusive (no charge). Room safe is usually free. Phone calls are expensive β use WiFi and WhatsApp instead.
- Spa upsells: Massages and spa treatments are not included in the promotional package price. These are add-on costs.
The Promotional Presentation
The 90-minute presentation is the key to these prices. Here’s what to expect:
You’ll sit with a resort sales rep who’ll explain the vacation club program β how it works, how you can book future vacations, and what membership involves. There’s no obligation to buy. Most guests say the savings alone (compared to retail) justify the time spent.
The presentation is typically:
- Scheduled during your stay (you pick the day/time)
- Held at the resort sales office
- Covers vacation club benefits, booking options, and pricing
- No pressure to decide on the spot
- Ends with a light gift or resort credit (varies by property)
Thousands of guests attend these presentations every year. It’s straightforward, and the savings are real.
Should You Book a Promotional Package?
Ask yourself these questions:
Are you flexible on dates? Promotional packages usually have blackout dates around major holidays (Christmas, Spring Break). If you need to travel mid-December or Spring Break week, you may not have promotional availability.
Can you attend the presentation? If you’re someone who wants zero commitments and prefers to just relax, retail booking is simpler. The presentation is a trade-off for savings.
What’s your priority? If budget is your main concern, promotional packages deliver the best value. If you want zero structure and maximum flexibility, retail booking is easier.
Are you interested in future vacations? The presentation also introduces vacation club membership. If that interests you, the presentation gives you all the details. If not, no problem β you still get the discount.
