Traveling to Mexico with Kids: Family Guide for Sandos Resorts
Everything families need to know about traveling to Mexico with children β which Sandos resorts welcome kids, what's included, age-appropriate activities, and practical tips for stress-free family travel.
March 28, 2026
Taking the family to Mexico doesn’t have to be complicated. When you choose a kid-friendly all-inclusive resort, meals are covered, activities are built in, and you actually get to relax. At Sandos, we’ve perfected the family vacation experience across three distinct resorts, each designed to make traveling with kids easier, safer, and more memorable.
This guide walks you through which Sandos properties welcome families, what’s included, how kids clubs work, and everything you need to know to plan a stress-free Mexico vacation with your children.
Which Sandos Resorts Welcome Families?
Not all Sandos resorts are created equal when it comes to families. Here’s the clear breakdown:
Sandos Playacar β The Family Flagship
Sandos Playacar is the dedicated family resort. It’s where Sandos families go, and it shows. The property features two full waterparks, eight swimming pools, a dedicated kids club, and a teens club. You’ll see families everywhere β this is the infrastructure built for you. The resort sits in the gated Playacar community just south of Playa del Carmen, meaning extra security and a quieter vibe than downtown areas. The Caribbean beach is long, swimmable, and you’ll regularly spot spider monkeys roaming the grounds. Playacar is 10 minutes from the vibrant 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen if you want to explore beyond the resort.
Sandos Caracol β The Nature Experience
Sandos Caracol welcomes families with a completely different vibe. This eco-resort sits on a nature sanctuary with cenotes on the property, a lazy river fed by an underground river, and wildlife throughout the grounds. Unlike Playacar’s water park intensity, Caracol offers a kids waterpark with over 20 slides, jungle trails, cenote swimming, and eco-education programs. Families who love nature and want their kids to experience something beyond the typical resort routine gravitate here. Coatis (local wildlife) roam freely, and the whole property feels like a controlled adventure. You’ll see fewer families here than at Playacar, which means a more peaceful experience.
Sandos Finisterra β Cabo with Kids
Sandos Finisterra in Cabo San Lucas is family-friendly and offers its own appeal. Kids club, teens club, camel rides, and glass-bottom boats create a unique experience. During whale-watching season (December through April), you can spot whales from the pool deck. However, Finisterra’s Pacific-side beach has strong currents and isn’t suitable for swimming β the calm beach is on the marina side. Downtown Cabo is walking distance, which families enjoy. Finisterra works best for families seeking adventure and variety rather than pool-centric relaxation.
Sandos CancΓΊn β Adults Only, NOT for Families
Sandos CancΓΊn is strictly for adults 18 and older. This is a couples-focused property β no children, no exceptions. If you’re considering Sandos CancΓΊn, it’s the perfect choice for a couple’s retreat without kids. But for family travel, the three resorts above are your options.
What’s Included for Kids
All-inclusive means all-inclusive. When you book a promotional family package, every child’s meals, snacks, drinks, and kids club are included β no hidden per-child charges.
Standard Family Package (Playacar & Caracol)
Promotional family packages are priced for two adults and two children (ages 12 and under). That’s your baseline. Kids over 12 can typically be added at a per-child cost, but check the current promotion details for your travel dates.
Finisterra Pricing
Finisterra operates differently. Children can be added at an additional charge per child per night, with pricing varying by season.
What This Covers
- All meals at every restaurant on the property
- Snacks and beverages (including alcohol for adults)
- Kids club activities and supervision
- Beach access and pool use
- Most activities (some premium experiences like off-property tours have separate costs)
The only requirement: you attend a short property presentation (90-120 minutes) during your stay. Kids don’t attend β they’re in kids club during that time, having fun with supervisors.
Kids Club & Teens Club
Kids clubs at Sandos resorts aren’t daycare. They’re actual programming designed to keep kids engaged, supervised, and having legitimate fun.
What to Expect
Kids club typically operates during standard daytime hours and offers:
- Supervised group games and sports
- Arts and crafts projects
- Pool activities and water games
- Age-appropriate entertainment and shows
- Special themed days and activities
Teens Club
Teenagers get their own space with programming tailored to their age group β think more independence, sports competitions, and activities that feel cooler than “kids club.”
The Real Benefit
Parents get free time. Uninterrupted couple time. A massage. Lunch alone at a restaurant. This is a feature, not a bug. Your kids are supervised by trained staff in a safe, activity-filled environment while you actually get a break during your vacation.
Each resort tailors programming slightly differently. Playacar offers the most comprehensive daily schedule. Caracol incorporates nature and eco-education into activities. Finisterra focuses on adventure and exploration.
Sandos Playacar for Families β The Deep Dive
If waterpark-centric fun is your family’s style, Sandos Playacar is purpose-built for you.
The Waterparks
Two dedicated waterparks on the property mean variety. One is geared toward younger kids with shallow pools, gentler slides, and splash zones. The other serves older kids and thrill-seekers with taller slides and faster currents. Both have trained lifeguards. Kids can move between them freely, and there’s enough variety that you’re not stuck in one area all week.
Eight Pools
Beyond the waterparks, eight additional pools give you options. Quieter pool areas for relaxation. Family-friendly areas with shallower water and toys. Adult-only pool sections if you need a break. On any given day, you can move around based on crowds and your mood.
The Beach
The Caribbean side means a long, sandy beach with calm, swimmable water. The swim is gentle, the sand is quality, and it’s the perfect place for young kids to build sandcastles or wade while you read. No dangerous currents like you get on the Pacific side.
Wildlife
Spider monkeys roam the Playacar community. You’ll see them in the trees above the gardens. It’s a highlight for kids and surprisingly common. There’s nothing to do except watch and enjoy β they’re used to guests and don’t interact.
Location & Community
Playacar is a gated, secure community just south of Playa del Carmen. The resort is self-contained and safe. If you want to explore beyond the property, downtown Playa del Carmen and the famous 5th Avenue are a 10-minute drive. Visit our guide on Playa del Carmen nightlife and 5th Avenue for things to do when you venture out.
Bottom Line
Playacar is the logical choice if your family’s vacation centers on pools, slides, and water activities. The infrastructure is there. The staff knows how to manage families. And honestly, the variety keeps kids entertained.
Sandos Caracol for Families β The Nature Experience
For families drawn to something different, Sandos Caracol offers an eco-resort experience that educates while entertaining.
Cenotes on the Property
Cenotes are natural sinkholes in the YucatΓ‘n Peninsula filled with fresh water. Caracol has cenotes on its grounds. You don’t need to drive 30 minutes to a separate park β swim in cenotes steps away from your room. The water is cool, clear, and surrounded by jungle. Kids find this legitimately exciting.
The Underground River & Lazy River
An underground river feeds a lazy river that flows through the resort. It’s not high-speed rapids β it’s a gentle float through landscaped channels. Kids can tube it, splash in it, or explore at their own pace.
Mini Waterpark with 20+ Slides
Caracol’s waterpark is scaled differently than Playacar’s. It’s impressive but not two full parks worth. Still, 20+ slides gives plenty of variety, and the whole park is designed for families.
Wildlife Sanctuary & Eco-Programs
Caracol operates as a wildlife sanctuary. Coatis (raccoon-like creatures native to Mexico) roam freely throughout the property. You’ll see them near restaurants, in the gardens, around pools. They’re accustomed to humans and aren’t aggressive, but they’re wild. Jungle trails crisscross the property for families who want to explore nature on foot. Eco-education programs teach kids about the YucatΓ‘n ecosystem, cenote geology, and local wildlife. It’s education wrapped in vacation fun.
Location & Nearby
Caracol is south of Playacar, deeper into nature. The drive to downtown Playa del Carmen is about 20 minutes. But that distance is intentional β Caracol is about staying at the resort and experiencing nature, not hopping between attractions.
Day Excursions
Caracol is positioned well for visits to major eco-parks. Xcaret, Xel-HΓ‘, and Xplor are all nearby. We’ve written detailed comparisons if you’re considering these parks: Xcaret vs. Xplor vs. Xel-HΓ‘. Many families book one eco-park visit during their Caracol stay to explore beyond the resort.
Best Cenote Guide
Want to know more about cenotes? See our guide to the best cenotes near Sandos resorts.
Bottom Line
Caracol appeals to families wanting nature, education, and a sense of exploration. Your kids will remember the cenotes and wildlife more than another waterslide. Parents who love outdoor experiences and want to expose kids to something unique gravitate here.
Sandos Finisterra for Families β Cabo with Kids
Finisterra in Cabo San Lucas offers a different vacation altogether β adventure, desert vistas, and Pacific beauty.
Whale Watching from the Pool Deck
December through April is grey whale migration season. You can legitimately spot whales from the resort pool decks. It’s a jaw-dropping moment for kids and adults. No boat excursion needed β just be at the pool and you might see one.
Activities & Adventures
Camel rides on the property. Glass-bottom boats to see fish without getting wet. Kid-friendly cultural experiences and entertainment shows. Finisterra keeps activities diverse and adventure-oriented.
Important: Beach Reality
Finisterra’s main beach faces the Pacific Ocean. The water has strong currents and isn’t safe for swimming with young kids β or really anyone without experience with Pacific beach conditions. The calm water is on the marina side of the resort. The natural drama of the Pacific is beautiful, but it’s not where you swim.
Downtown Cabo
Cabo San Lucas town is walking distance (or a short shuttle). Family-friendly restaurants, shops, and a marina area for exploration. It’s accessible if you want to venture out.
Best for Older Kids & Families Seeking Variety
Finisterra works well for families with older kids who want activities beyond swimming. The whale watching, camel rides, and glass-bottom boats offer novelty. The property feels more resort-hotel than the laid-back vibes of Playacar or the nature immersion of Caracol.
Things to Do in Cabo
Explore our guide to things to do in Cabo San Lucas for ideas on activities near the resort.
Bottom Line
Finisterra is for families wanting a different destination experience rather than a beach vacation. Whale watching and adventure activities appeal more than waterpark intensity.
Practical Tips for Family Travel to Mexico
Traveling internationally with kids requires preparation. Here’s what actually matters:
Passports for Everyone
Every family member needs a valid passport, including infants. This is non-negotiable. Apply weeks in advance β passport processing can take time. Bring copies of passport information pages in your luggage separate from passports.
Car Seats
If you’re renting a car or taking a shuttle to the resort and plan to drive off-property, bring your own car seats. Mexican regulations require them for young children, and rental agencies often don’t have them available. It’s worth the checked baggage space.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen
If you plan to swim in cenotes or visit eco-parks like Xcaret, reef-safe sunscreen is required. Regular sunscreen contains chemicals that damage coral and marine ecosystems. Many cenotes and parks won’t allow you in without reef-safe alternatives. Buy it before travel (it’s sometimes hard to find in Mexico) or plan to purchase at the resort.
Bug Spray
Mosquitoes exist in the YucatΓ‘n, particularly around jungle areas and during rainy season. Pack insect repellent, especially if you’re at Caracol or planning jungle activities. The resort provides some protection, but your own supply is useful.
Pack Light
Resorts have laundry service. You don’t need to pack every outfit. Light packing means easier airport navigation with kids and more room for souvenirs. Resorts can typically turn around laundry overnight.
Entertainment for the Flight
Download movies, shows, and games. Tablet-based entertainment is a godsend on long flights with kids. Don’t rely on airline in-flight systems.
Water Shoes for Cenotes
Cenote bottoms are often rocky or uneven. Water shoes protect kids’ feet while they explore. Bring simple water shoes from home.
Medications
Bring any required medications for your kids in original containers. Pain reliever, fever reducer, allergy medication, and any prescription drugs should be packed. Pharmacies in Mexico are good, but it’s easier to have what you know.
Activities Beyond the Resort
All-inclusive means you’re covered at the resort, but Mexico offers incredible experiences within reasonable distance.
Xcaret Eco-Adventure Park
Xcaret is the most popular eco-park in the Riviera Maya. Underground rivers, beach coves, cenotes, wildlife, and shows. Kids love it. It’s included in some promotional packages, or you can book it separately. We’ve written detailed comparisons of Xcaret, Xplor, and Xel-HΓ‘ if you’re deciding which park to visit.
Xel-HΓ‘ Natural All-Inclusive Park
Xel-HΓ‘ is a natural lagoon with calm, clear water perfect for snorkeling. All meals and activities are included once you pay entry. Kids enjoy gentle snorkeling, exploring tide pools, and seeing fish in natural habitat. It’s less crowded than Xcaret.
Cenote Visits
Beyond resort cenotes, guided cenote tours are available. Some cenotes are shallow and perfect for kids to wade and swim. Others are deeper or more adventurous. Tours can be booked through Seek & Go (mentioned below) or your resort concierge.
Tulum Ruins
Tulum is an ancient Mayan ruin site perched on cliffs overlooking the Caribbean. It’s educational and visually stunning. Distance from Playacar is about 40 minutes; from Caracol, about 20 minutes. It’s walkable but involves climbing stairs and heat, so it works better for older kids or families with patience for slower exploration.
Isla Mujeres
A short ferry ride from CancΓΊn (about 45 minutes from the resorts) takes you to Isla Mujeres, an island with calm beaches, a turtle sanctuary, and family-friendly exploring. The water is calmer than mainland beaches.
Glass-Bottom Boats & Water Activities
Available through most resorts. These let kids see fish and reefs without snorkeling skills.
Booking Activities Through Seek & Go
Seek & Go is a partner platform for booking excursions. Many resorts have Seek & Go kiosks, or you can book through their website. Prices are often better than booking directly at activity sites.
The Promotional Package with Kids β How It Actually Works
If you’re considering a Sandos vacation club promotional offer, here’s the transparent breakdown:
How You Qualify
The standard qualification is a couple (two adults). Your kids don’t need to meet criteria. If you have children, they’re eligible to travel included or at reduced cost depending on the promotion.
What Happens During Your Stay
During your 4-7 night stay, you attend a property presentation. This is the activation for your vacation club membership or promotional rate. The presentation is typically 90-120 minutes. You’ll learn about the vacation club, financing options, and future vacation opportunities.
Kids Don’t Attend
This is important: your kids do not attend the presentation. They stay in kids club while you’re in the meeting. It’s supervised, they’re having activities and fun, and you’re 90 minutes away. It’s built into the itinerary so there’s no scrambling for childcare.
Everything Else is Normal
Outside that one presentation, your vacation is a normal all-inclusive experience. Meals, pools, beaches, kids club, activities β all included. The presentation is the one requirement.
Is This the Same as Retail?
Yes. The all-inclusive experience for promotional members is the same as retail guests. Same rooms, same food, same activities, same service. The difference is your rate and membership structure, not the resort experience.
Questions About Terms?
See our terms and conditions page for specifics or contact us at contact@sandospromo.com with questions about your specific offer.
Planning Your Family Vacation
Timeline
Book 2-3 months in advance if possible. This gives you time to secure passports, arrange time off work, and lock in better rates.
Age Considerations
- Very young kids (0-3): Sandos resorts are welcoming, but very young children won’t use kids club. Playacar is easiest because you can keep them nearby with all the pool variety. Caracol and Finisterra work but are less geared toward infants/toddlers.
- School-age (4-12): Perfect for any resort. Kids clubs engage them, activities appeal to them, and they can enjoy beaches and pools independently.
- Teens: All three resorts have teens clubs. Older kids appreciate the autonomy and activities. Cabo might appeal more than the other resorts.
Budget Considerations
All-inclusive takes the guesswork out of expenses. No surprise meal costs, no activity add-ons (within the resort). Off-property excursions have separate costs, but your base vacation is budgeted. This makes family planning easier.
Travel Insurance
Consider travel insurance. It covers medical emergencies, flight cancellations, and lost luggage β all scenarios that are worse when you’re traveling with kids.
