Sandos Resorts: An Honest Review After 14 Nights at Caracol and Playacar
A real review from someone who spent 14 nights at Sandos resorts — what's great, what's not, and what you need to know before booking. No fake reviews, no affiliate hype.
March 28, 2026
I spent 14 nights across Sandos Caracol and Sandos Playacar in May 2021—right when Mexico reopened after COVID shutdowns. The resorts were running at roughly 50% capacity, which meant fewer crowds and more attention from staff. I documented everything in 180 videos. This isn’t a sponsored review or travel blogger hype. I built this business because of what I actually experienced at these resorts.
What’s Genuinely Great
The Beaches
Playacar has one of the best Caribbean beaches I’ve seen. Long, swimmable, white sand that feels exactly like what you’re imagining when you book a Mexico vacation. Caracol’s beach is smaller but still solid—what you lose in size you make up for in being less crowded.
The Wildlife
This is the standout. Caracol and Playacar both sit on jungle property. You see monkeys, coatis, iguanas, and tropical birds constantly—not from a tour, just walking around the resort. If you’re into nature, this alone makes Caracol worth considering.
Cenotes at Caracol
The resort has actual cenotes on the property. Not a photo op—actual swimming cenotes. If you’ve never been in one, it’s worth the trip.
Food Quality (When You Do It Right)
Skip the buffet. The à la carte sit-down restaurants are legitimately good. Real attention to quality, not assembly-line volume. This is where the restaurant quality gap shows.
Seek & Go Excursions
These are organized by the resort, insured, and convenient. You don’t have to hunt for off-site tours. They work.
The Staff
When the resort isn’t overcrowded, the staff is warm and genuinely helpful. During my visit at 50% capacity, people remembered your name and asked about your day. That changes at full occupancy.
The Royal Elite Upgrade
If you’re considering this: the dining and beach club access are on another level. Better restaurants, better drink selection, quieter pools, reserved beach area. It’s a noticeable step up.
What’s Honest to Address
The Buffet at Full Capacity
At 50%, the buffet was fine. At full capacity, it gets crowded and quality drops compared to the à la carte restaurants. This is true of most all-inclusives, but it matters.
Room Upgrades Aren’t Guaranteed
You get what your package says you’re getting. They won’t upgrade you to a suite unless you pay for it or luck into a comp. Don’t assume you’ll get bumped up.
WiFi Can Be Spotty
Resort WiFi works most of the time. Don’t bank on streaming or video calls if that matters for your trip.
The Presentation IS a Sales Pitch
The resort is beautiful and professional, but they absolutely will ask you to buy a vacation club membership. It’s not aggressive, but it’s there. Know that going in. If you’re just there for a vacation, you can decline.
At Full Capacity, Crowds Matter
Pools fill up, beach chairs go fast, restaurant reservations get competitive. Your experience will be different at 100% occupancy than what I saw at 50%. Plan accordingly.
Standard Drink Menu Is Well Liquor
The included drinks are perfectly fine. But if you’re used to top-shelf, Royal Elite has noticeably better options.
Caracol vs. Playacar—Which One?
Both resorts are in Playa del Carmen, about 15 minutes apart. They serve different purposes.
Choose Caracol if: You want eco-resort vibes, cenotes, jungle, wildlife watching, and fewer crowds. It’s quieter and more nature-focused.
Choose Playacar if: You want a full-featured beach resort with multiple restaurants, bigger pools, a waterpark, and easy access to 5th Avenue shops and restaurants.
I loved both, but they’re different experiences.
The COVID Timing Caveat
My stay was at 50% capacity. That’s not normal. Fewer people everywhere meant easier restaurant reservations, more personal attention from staff, and a more relaxed vibe. If you want something closer to what I experienced, book during regular or low season, not peak winter weeks.
180 Videos—Raw Reality
I documented the whole trip. The videos aren’t polished marketing content—they’re raw footage showing what the resorts actually look like day-to-day. You can watch the full playlist here. No script, no filters.
The Bottom Line
Sandos resorts are genuinely good. Not perfect—anyone selling perfection is lying. The promotional vacation club package is a real deal (54-73% off market rates). The presentation is a sales process, but it’s a trade-off that makes sense if you’re getting value.
Go with realistic expectations—expect good beaches, good staff (especially at lower capacity), good food if you choose the right restaurants, and genuine wildlife. Don’t expect a perfect resort with zero crowds or flawless service. Expect what you’re paying for: a solid all-inclusive in a beautiful location.
