Snorkeling in the Riviera Maya — Complete Guide
The Riviera Maya sits along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second-largest coral reef system in the world, stretching from the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula down to Honduras. Add thousands of freshwater cenotes, natural inlets, and protected marine parks, and you have some of the best snorkeling on the planet.
Here’s every way to get underwater during your Sandos vacation, from all-day water parks to guided reef expeditions to cenote cave swimming.
Xel-Há — The All-Inclusive Snorkeling Paradise
If you want to snorkel all day without thinking about anything else, Xel-Há is the answer.
It’s a massive natural inlet where freshwater rivers meet the Caribbean Sea, creating a calm, crystal-clear environment packed with hundreds of species of tropical fish. The entire park is designed for water — snorkel from one end to the other, float on inner tubes, jump off cliffs, rest in hammocks, eat and drink as much as you want.
What’s included: Unlimited snorkeling with gear, unlimited all-inclusive food and drinks (including alcohol), lockers, towels, inner tubes, bike trails, cliff jumping, and hammock areas.
What it’s like: Imagine a snorkeling highway — you enter the water at one end of the inlet and snorkel downstream through mangroves, over coral gardens, and past schools of fish. When you reach the end, a shuttle takes you back to the start. Repeat as many times as you want.
Who it’s for: Families (calm water, shallow areas for kids), casual snorkelers, anyone who wants all-inclusive water fun without adrenaline pressure.
Seek & Go pricing: from $155 USD (Cancún or Riviera Maya pickup)
Snorkel Xtreme — Guided Reef Tour
For snorkelers who want the reef experience — not a theme park, not a lagoon, but actual barrier reef snorkeling with a guide.
Snorkel Xtreme takes you to multiple reef sites in the Caribbean, guided by experienced instructors who know where the best coral formations and marine life are.
What’s included: Round-trip transportation from your resort, professional guide, snorkel equipment, reef access.
What it’s like: Boat ride out to reef sites, then guided snorkeling sessions at each location. You’ll see brain coral, fan coral, parrotfish, angelfish, barracuda, sea turtles (if you’re lucky), and stingrays. The visibility in the Caribbean is exceptional — 50–100+ feet on calm days.
Who it’s for: Experienced snorkelers or anyone who wants a real reef experience with professional guidance.
Seek & Go pricing:
- From Riviera Maya: from $129 USD
- From Cancún: from $149 USD
Cenote Snorkeling
Cenotes are freshwater sinkholes formed when limestone bedrock collapses, exposing the underground river system beneath the Yucatán. The water is filtered through limestone, making it impossibly clear — visibility can exceed 200 feet.
Xenotes Tour — 4 Cenotes in One Day
The best cenote experience available. Visit four different types of cenotes: rappel into a cavern cenote, zip-line into an open cenote, kayak a semi-open cenote, and swim/snorkel an ancient cenote. Small groups, jungle picnic lunch included.
Seek & Go pricing: from $150 USD (Cancún or Riviera Maya pickup)
Cenotes Combined with Ruins Tours
Many Seek & Go tours combine Mayan ruins with cenote swimming. The Tulum Adventure ($139–$149) and Xichén Classic ($150) both include cenote stops. After walking sun-baked ruins, cooling off in a cenote is the perfect counterpoint.
Underwater Museum (MUSA)
The Museo Subacuático de Arte — MUSA — is an underwater sculpture garden off the coast of Cancún and Isla Mujeres. Over 500 life-size sculptures sit on the ocean floor in shallow water, creating artificial reef structures that attract marine life.
Snorkeling MUSA is available on some Cancún tours. You float above the sculptures in 12–15 feet of water. The combination of art and marine life is unlike anything else.
Available through the Seek & Go desk at Sandos Cancún.

Snorkeling Tips for the Riviera Maya
Reef-safe sunscreen is mandatory. Many parks and reef sites require biodegradable, reef-safe sunscreen. Regular sunscreen with oxybenzone and octinoxate damages coral. Buy reef-safe sunscreen before your trip — it’s available at the resort but cheaper at home.
You don’t need to be a strong swimmer. Life jackets are provided (and often required) at parks like Xel-Há. Cenotes and guided reef tours also provide flotation. If you can float and breathe through a snorkel, you can do this.
Prescription masks are available. If you wear glasses, ask about prescription snorkel masks when booking. Many operators have them.
Don’t touch anything underwater. Coral is alive and fragile. Fish don’t appreciate being grabbed. Sea urchins will ruin your day. Look, photograph, float — don’t touch.
Morning sessions have better visibility. Wind picks up in the afternoon, which can stir sediment. Early departures get calmer, clearer water.
