Things to Do in the Riviera Maya: The Complete Adventure Guide

From ancient ruins to underwater caves, here's everything worth doing in the Riviera Maya. Insider tips from someone who's actually been there.

March 9, 2026

The Riviera Maya isn’t just a beach destination — it’s an adventure corridor stretching from Cancún to Tulum, packed with Mayan ruins, underground rivers, eco-parks, and some of the best diving in the Western Hemisphere. If you’re staying at Sandos Caracol or Sandos Playacar, you’re positioned right in the heart of it all.

Here’s what’s actually worth your time.

The Must-Do Experiences

Swim in a Cenote

The Yucatán Peninsula sits on porous limestone riddled with underground rivers. Where the rock collapses, you get cenotes — natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear freshwater. The ancient Maya considered them sacred portals to the underworld.

There are thousands of cenotes in the region. Some are open-air swimming holes surrounded by jungle. Others are caverns you rappel into. A few are pitch-black caves reserved for advanced divers.

Walk Through Mayan History

Three archaeological sites are essential:

Chichén Itzá — One of the New Seven Wonders. The Pyramid of Kukulcán, the massive Ball Court, the Temple of Warriors. It’s a 2.5-hour drive but absolutely worth it. Go early to beat the heat and crowds.

Tulum — The only major Mayan ruins overlooking the Caribbean. Smaller than Chichén Itzá, but that cliffside setting over turquoise water is unbeatable. Just 45 minutes south of Playa del Carmen.

Cobá — Deep in the jungle, less touristy. You can still climb the main pyramid (Nohoch Mul) — 120 steps to a view over endless jungle canopy.

Experience the Eco-Parks

The Xcaret Group operates the best eco-parks in Mexico:

Dive or Snorkel the Mesoamerican Reef

You’re on the second-largest barrier reef system in the world. It’s right offshore.

Snorkeling is included in most island trips. Even beginners see parrotfish, angelfish, sea turtles, and rays.

Scuba diving options range from beginner reef dives to advanced cenote diving and seasonal bull shark encounters (November–March).

Swim with Whale Sharks

From June to September, whale sharks — the largest fish in the ocean — congregate off Isla Mujeres to feed on plankton. Swimming alongside a 30-foot filter-feeder is humbling.

Snorkel only. No scuba, no touching. One of the top wildlife experiences available anywhere.

Day Trips Worth Taking

Isla Mujeres — Small island north of Cancún. Catamaran trips include sailing, snorkeling, beach club time. Relaxed beach-town vibe.

Cozumel — Larger island with world-class diving. Palancar Reef, Colombia Reef, and the town of San Miguel.

Holbox — Remote island known for bioluminescent waters, flamingos, and whale sharks (seasonal).

Valladolid — Colonial town near Chichén Itzá. Colorful buildings, authentic food, cenotes nearby.

On-Resort Wildlife

You don’t have to leave the resort for wildlife. Sandos Caracol and Sandos Playacar are built into the jungle:
