Tulum Ruins Day Trip — What to Expect
Tulum is the only major Mayan archaeological site overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Ancient stone temples perched on cliffs above turquoise water — it’s one of the most photographed places in Mexico, and the setting genuinely delivers.
From Sandos Playacar or Sandos Caracol in Playa del Carmen, Tulum is about 45 minutes south. From Sandos Cancún, it’s about 90 minutes. Either way, it’s an easy day trip that gets you back to the resort with plenty of afternoon left.
The Tulum Adventure Tour
Seek & Go’s Tulum Adventure combines the archaeological site with additional stops — typically a cenote swim, a reef snorkel, or beach time below the ruins.
What’s included: Round-trip transportation from your Sandos resort, bilingual guide, entrance fees, and activity stops.
Pricing
| Departure | Price (USD) |
|---|---|
| From Riviera Maya (Playacar / Caracol) | from $139 |
| From Cancún | from $149 |
What You’ll See
The Castillo — The iconic clifftop temple facing the sea. This is the postcard image. It sits on a 40-foot cliff above a small cove with pale sand and clear water.
The Temple of the Frescoes — Murals depicting Mayan deities. One of the best-preserved examples of Mayan wall painting.
The Temple of the Descending God — Named for the upside-down carved figure above the doorway. Unique to Tulum.
The walls — Tulum means “wall” in Mayan. The site is one of the few fortified Mayan cities. Three sides are enclosed by thick stone walls; the fourth side is the cliff above the sea.
The beach — Below the ruins, there’s a small but stunning beach in the cove. Some tours include time here for swimming. The water is warm, clear, and the backdrop is a Mayan temple on a cliff.
The site itself is compact compared to Chichén Itzá — you can walk the entire thing in about an hour with a guide. The smaller size is actually a plus: less walking, less time in the sun, more time to appreciate the setting.
Tips
- Go early — Tulum gets crowded by mid-morning. Tours with early departures have the ruins nearly to themselves for the first hour.
- Sunscreen and hat are non-negotiable — Almost no shade on site.
- Wear your swimsuit — Whether you’re hitting the beach below the ruins or a cenote stop, you’ll want it.
- Comfortable shoes — The paths are rocky and uneven. No flip-flops.
- Iguanas — They’re everywhere at Tulum. Huge, docile, and great photo subjects. Don’t feed them.
- Water — Bring your own. Vendors inside charge tourist prices.
Tulum + Cenote Combos
Many Seek & Go tours pair Tulum with a cenote swim. After walking the sun-baked ruins, cooling off in a freshwater cenote — crystal-clear water in a cave or jungle setting — is the perfect contrast. Ask the Seek & Go desk about combo options.
