Xcaret vs Xel-Há vs Xplor — Which Park Should You Visit?

The Xcaret Group operates nine parks and tours in the Riviera Maya, but three dominate the conversation: Xcaret, Xel-Há, and Xplor. They’re all excellent. They’re all full-day experiences. And they’re all very different.

If you only have time for one park during your Sandos vacation, this guide will help you pick the right one.

Xcaret — The Flagship

Xcaret is the park that started it all. It’s massive, it’s varied, and you could spend two full days here without seeing everything.

What you’ll do: Float through underground rivers in the jungle. Snorkel in a protected cove with tropical fish. Walk through a butterfly pavilion, an orchid greenhouse, and a wildlife area with spider monkeys, jaguars, and flamingos. Visit a replica Mayan village. Tour a tequila production facility with tastings. And after dark, watch “Mexico Espectacular” — a 300-performer show telling the history of Mexico through music, dance, and pre-Hispanic ball games. It’s genuinely spectacular.

What’s included in the Basic ticket: Park access, underground rivers, snorkeling cove, wildlife areas, evening show, all natural attractions.

What the Plus ticket adds: Buffet lunch, locker, snorkel gear rental, towels, and a non-alcoholic drink bar. If you’re going for a full day (and you should), Plus is worth it.

Who it’s best for: First-time visitors to the Riviera Maya who want to experience everything in one place. Families with older children. Couples who want variety. Anyone who loves the combination of nature, culture, and entertainment.

Who should skip it: People looking for pure adrenaline (go to Xplor). People who just want to float and snorkel all day with unlimited drinks (go to Xel-Há).

Xel-Há — The All-Inclusive Water Park

Xel-Há is nature’s water park. A massive inlet where freshwater rivers flow into the Caribbean Sea, creating a natural snorkeling paradise with hundreds of species of fish. It’s all-inclusive — unlimited food, unlimited drinks (including alcohol), unlimited snorkeling, all day long.

What you’ll do: Snorkel through crystal-clear lagoons filled with tropical fish. Float on inner tubes down a lazy river through mangroves. Jump off cliffs into the water (multiple heights — pick your comfort level). Ride bikes along jungle trails. Get a river-side massage. Eat at multiple restaurants. Drink as much as you want.

What’s included: Everything. Park access, all food and drinks (including alcohol), snorkel gear, inner tubes, life jackets, lockers, towels, bike rentals, hammock areas. The only thing that costs extra is photos, spa services, and premium experiences like the zip-line and Sea Trek (underwater helmet walk).

Who it’s best for: Families with children of any age — the water is calm and shallow in many areas. Couples who want a relaxing day with drinks. Anyone who loves snorkeling. People who don’t want to think about what anything costs once they’re inside the gate.

Who should skip it: Hardcore adventure seekers — Xel-Há is relaxing, not adrenaline-pumping. People who don’t like water (it’s almost entirely water-based). Visitors who are primarily interested in culture or wildlife (go to Xcaret).

Seek & Go pricing: from $155 USD (Playa del Carmen or Cancún pickup)

Xplor — The Adrenaline Park

Xplor is the adventure capital of the Riviera Maya. Everything here is designed to get your heart rate up.

What you’ll do: Fly across 14 zip-lines — some over a mile long — including two that splash down into water. Drive amphibious vehicles (you actually drive them yourself) through jungle trails and underground caves with stalactites. Swim and raft through underground rivers with headlamps, navigating dark cave systems. Paddle through more caverns at your own pace.

What’s included: Park access, all activities, buffet lunch, juice and water bar. Lockers, life jackets, helmets, headlamps — all equipment provided.

The night version — Xplor Fuego: Same park, same activities, but after dark with torches, bonfires, and fire-lit paths. The zip-lines feel faster when you can’t see the ground. Available evenings only. From $155 USD.

Who it’s best for: Thrill seekers. Active couples looking for a shared adrenaline experience. Teens and young adults. Anyone who wants to zip-line, drive through caves, and swim through underground rivers in a single day.

Who should skip it: Young children (height and weight restrictions apply to zip-lines). People with mobility limitations. Visitors who prefer a more relaxed pace (go to Xel-Há or Xcaret).

Side-by-Side Decision Guide

“I’ve never been to the Riviera Maya — which park first?”

Xcaret. It gives you the broadest experience — nature, wildlife, culture, underground rivers, snorkeling, and the evening show. You’ll understand why this region is special.

“I’m traveling with young kids”

Xel-Há. Calm water, unlimited snacks and drinks, no intensity requirements. Kids can splash around safely while parents relax. Xcaret is also good for families but requires more walking.

“My partner and I want something exciting”

Xplor for daytime adrenaline, or Xplor Fuego for a night-adventure date. Sunset Sailing (from $109) is the romantic alternative if you want something calmer.

“I want to snorkel all day”

Xel-Há. It’s built for snorkeling, the gear is included, and you can go in and out of the water as many times as you want between meals and drinks.

“I want the best value”

Xel-Há — all food, all drinks, all gear, all activities included in the ticket price. No surprise costs inside the park.

“I only have half a day”

Xenses ($105) — the Xcaret Group’s sensory park. Shorter experience, lower intensity, still excellent. Or Xplor Fuego if you want evening adventure.

“Can I do more than one?”

Absolutely. Many Sandos guests do Xcaret one day and Xplor or Xel-Há another. If you’re spending 5+ nights, you have time for two parks easily. The Seek & Go desk can help you plan the schedule.
