My Royal Elite Experience

May 2021: COVID Reopening

I visited Sandos Caracol and Sandos Playacar in May 2021 — just the second month after Mexico’s COVID reopening. The resorts were operating at 50% capacity.

What I Actually Did

🤿 Scuba Diving on the Mesoamerican Reef

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the second-largest reef system in the world — stretching from Cancún down to Honduras. It’s right offshore from Playa del Carmen.

I did multiple dives through Seek & Go, seeing:

• Sea turtles grazing on seagrass
• Eagle rays gliding past
• Nurse sharks resting on the bottom
• Parrotfish, angelfish, and barracuda

The reef is healthy, colorful, and accessible even for intermediate divers.

🦈 Whale Sharks off Isla Mujeres

June through September, whale sharks — the largest fish in the ocean — congregate off Isla Mujeres to feed on plankton. Seek & Go arranged a full-day trip from Playa del Carmen.

Swimming alongside a 30-foot whale shark is humbling. They’re filter feeders, completely harmless, and surprisingly graceful for their size. One of the top wildlife experiences of my life.

🪂 Parasailing at Playacar Beach

Right off the beach at Sandos Playacar, Seek & Go runs parasailing. You launch from the boat, fly 200+ feet above the Caribbean, and see the coastline stretching in both directions.

Quick, easy, and an incredible perspective on the Riviera Maya.

🐒 Feeding Spider Monkeys at Playacar

One of the unexpected highlights: spider monkeys live in the trees around Sandos Playacar and come down to interact with guests. I spent hours over multiple days feeding and filming them.

They’re wild but habituated to humans — curious, playful, and surprisingly gentle. Early mornings were the best time to find them active.

🍤 Fresh Ceviche on the Boat

The whale shark tour included ceviche prepared fresh on the boat with lime, cilantro, and whatever the captain caught that morning. Eating ceviche on the Caribbean Sea, watching the Isla Mujeres coastline — that’s the kind of moment you remember.

🍽️ The Buffets at Caracol and Playacar

All-inclusive means unlimited food, but these resorts take it seriously. Both Sandos Caracol and Sandos Playacar have massive buffets with made-to-order stations, fresh seafood, Mexican specialties, and international options.

I filmed extensively at both — breakfast, lunch, dinner. The variety is real, the quality is solid, and you won’t go hungry.
