If you’ve shopped resort promotional packages, you’ve hit this clause: “Friends or family traveling to the same resort on overlapping dates under separate confirmation numbers will not qualify — all parties pay the full rack rate.”
In the industry, that’s called a quinella — two couples traveling together, each on their own promotional package. The term comes from horse racing, where a quinella bet picks two horses to finish together. Resorts borrowed it for two couples trying to vacation together on separate promo contracts. And nearly everywhere, it’s prohibited.
Why the Quinella Ban Exists
A promotional rate is a marketing deal: a steep discount in exchange for you and your partner attending a 90–120 minute vacation club presentation. The resort’s sales model depends on each couple deciding independently. Two couples who know each other compare notes, anchor each other’s objections, and close at a fraction of the rate of independent couples. The resorts know this from decades of data — so they wrote it out of the program.
How Resorts Catch It
Promotional inventory is tiny — typically 4–6 couples per five-day block. Every promo guest passes the same front desk, the same concierge, the same presentation room. Arrivals are cross-referenced by flight, surname, hometown, and emergency contact. Sales staff are trained to spot connected parties. A shared cab or a wave across the lobby is enough.
What It Costs
When connected couples are identified on separate contracts, all reservations are cancelled and everyone is charged the full retail rack rate — often $400–$700 per night in peak season, with no refunds from any vendor. Read the full policy on our terms and qualifications page.
The Two Legal Ways to Travel With Another Couple
1. One contract, two couples (the Sandos way). Sandos resorts allow two couples on a single declared reservation: couple 1 gets the base promotional rate, couple 2 pays per-person-per-night extras, and all four adults attend the presentation together. Up to two rooms per contract. Full details in the Two-Couple Travel section of our terms.
2. Book a resort that allows quinellas outright. A handful of resorts on our sister site, VacationClubPromo, explicitly permit two couples on two separate packages, same dates, openly declared:
- Krystal Cancún — Cancún Hotel Zone. 4–5 nights all-inclusive, 2 adults + 2 kids (12 or younger), $749 all-in; Christmas & New Year’s weeks $1,249 all-in. Two couples welcome, even on holiday weeks.
- Seadust Cancun Family Resort — Cancún. 6 days/5 nights with a waterpark, 2 adults + 2 kids under 12 (or 1 junior under 16). Two couples welcome; regular season only.
- Marina Fiesta Resort & Spa — Cabo San Lucas marina. 5 days/4 nights, 2 adults + 2 kids under 12, $749 all-in; high season $1,249 all-in. Two couples accepted — friends only, not family.

Bottom Line
Don’t run a quinella at a resort that bans it — the math never works, and the penalty is rack rate for everyone. If traveling with friends is the point of the trip, either declare both couples on one Sandos contract, or book one of the resorts above where two packages on the same dates is simply allowed. Same beach, same dinners together, zero risk.
