Mexico’s White Nosed Coati

My favorite are the Coatis also known as:
Mexican raccoon, Kudamundi, Coatimundi, Pizot, Hog-nosed raccoon, Tejón, Moncún, Cusumbo, Cuchucho, Cholugo, Gato Solo, Hog Nosed Coon and Nasua.
These guys and girls travel and live in packs from 5 to 20. If you see and feed one it won’t be long before a bunch more show up.
Coatis are 13 to 27 inches in length and weigh 4 to 18 pounds. They sleep in elevated areas like the forest canopy and can be active both day or night. Coatis live about 7 years in the wild but can live in captivity up to 15.
Coatis are omnivores and their diet consists of ground litter, invertebrates, tarantula, and fruit. They also eat small vertebrate prey such as lizards, rodents, small birds, bird eggs and crocodile eggs.
Read more about Coatis on the Sandos Blog!

Agouti or Sereque
Agoutis have five front and three hind toes; the first toe is very small. The tail is very short or nonexistent and hairless. Agoutis are very shy and live in the forest areas.

They are very fast rodents and sit upright eating with their front fore paws. Agoutis are excellent swimmers and have a diet that consists of fruit, leaves, roots, eggs, shell fish and Brazil nuts. They have very sharp teeth!

Spider Monkey
The Spider Monkey (Wiki) is an endangered new world monkey (Wiki). Spider Monkeys are in the Atelidae family which are the only primates to have a tail they can grab things with.
The Spider Monkey is one of the largest monkeys and lives in the upper rain forest. They eat mainly fruits and nuts. If food is scarce they may eat insects, leaves, bird eggs, bark and honey. They live in groups of 15 to 40 and there primary predators are humans.
New studies show that the Spider Monkey is the smartest of the new world monkeys. They can live up to 22 years and there tail is twice as long as their body!

There were lots of fun included activities to do. We loved swimming in the cool water of the cenote. We enjoyed the Jade River tour, the dancing after the show, and the water slides. We visited as a couple, but our kids would have had a great time here too. The beach was a little rocky and seaweedy, but lots of people staying in other resorts along the coast had the same experience. There were a lot of different options for food. Our favorite was the Teppanyaki, which required reservations. We ate breakfast most of the time at the Brazilian which was great. The drinks were plentiful but not very strong which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing! We read less

Our Concierge guide, José Garza was exceptional since day one! He made sure all of our needs were met and made special accommodations for us throughout our stay. He assisted with reservations at the outstanding restaurants and the different activities this resort has to offer. We enjoyed the giant water park, Snorkeling at the Cenote, pools, Kayaking, Petting Zoo, walks in the jungle, the daily entertainment and so much more! We will definitely return and hopefully José Garza can be our guide again, he made our stay extra special and we are so grateful! read less

When you go, go see Carlos at the Elephant bar and ask him for an ice coffee! he makes the best!. At the Mexican restaurant, Dailin will greet you with a smile and treat you like a king/queen. Aside from the perfect site and great employees, there are so many on-site activities, you have to stay at the resort and not go out if you want to do/see everything! You need to reserve the day before for some of the activities, and we were lucky enough to have Felipe Gonzalez Yanez as our guide for the Mayan ruins tour he has so much cultural read less

Our holiday was booked with TUI pre-pandemic so the recent poor reviews were alarming, however they certainly weren't reflected in our experience. From the beginning: We waited just 15 mins for check in and there were 3 staff dealing with the newly arriving guests. To be fair, check in per family can take up to 10 mins given that the staff have to check passports, charge the eco tax, issue wrist bands etc. The reception was airconditioned and we were offered drinks from the bar while we waited. Our family of four had a Superior Family room at the back of the resort in a very quiet area, but a golf buggy took us there and our luggage was carried up the stairs for us. The room was spacious with a read less

Having read the reviews before we went, we were extremely worried, but we needn't have been. One of our reasons to choose the Sandos Caracol was the Penthouse room, and it was honestly one of the best hotel rooms we've stayed in as a family. We stayed in block 26 and loved the location, close enough to everything but far enough away to be quiet. The room was huge, two bedrooms, one with a huge double bed and the other with a large bunk beds (+ a roll out bed if needed). The 2 bathrooms were really clean and everything worked fine. The beds were really comfortable and we all slept well. Only complaint was there were no mugs for the coffee, but I'm sure they would have read less

Before we travelled I was quite sceptical about the holiday resort. However I am glad to say that scepticism wasn’t justified. Our transfer was waiting for us at the airport all smiles (we were the only guests being collected) so therefore check in was nice & quick. Your door key is attached to your all inclusive wristband & this also works the safe genius idea (no searching your bag each time). Ok admittedly at check in they didn’t go through each restaurant or resort activity individually but these details are to find on site. The same with the resort map & read less

Sandos Playacar has an AMAZING beach-- best one I've ever seen in Mexico. Our room was very clean, large and the beds were very comfortable. We enjoyed most meals (lunch was the only meal that could be improved -- the buffets get a little bit repetitive after a week). The Mexican (Gourmex) restaurant was our favorite for dinner. I had 2 amazing massages at the spa -- Karem made my back/shoulders feel better than they have felt in years! She was so much fun to talk to as well! I highly recommend the spa and doing the hydrotherapy. We visited Sandos Caracol for the day and enjoyed the nature and water park but left feeling very satisfied with choosing Sandos Playacar. It's worth a day visit (quick and affordable cab ride) but the buffet read less

Since you access the property you feel welcome by the staff, they were all the time so kind and willing to provide a great service. We arrived early in the morning for a daypass, at the front desk we received our brazelets and information about the resort and the attractions, then we ate breakfast at “Las Máscaras” where we enjoyed authentic Mexican food. Aftewards, we prepared to enjoy the Water Park, a magical place we enjoyed the most, and felt the adrenaline on the slides, the park was so clean and snacks and beverages delicious, we took a walk through the natural paths and enjoyed diversity of flora and fauna, ending our walk on the beach and then got prepare to taste a read less

Let me start at the beginning . We arrived on site via a small mini bus due to not many families travelling with TUI to this resort .straight away we said wow, it definitely had the carribean jungle vibe! Our luggage was unloaded for us and put to the side while we checked in, check in took 20 minutes maximum. We had to pay an environmental tax at the hotel of around £8 per person. We were informed that if our bracelets (keys to room) started to fray or become loose to come straight back for replacements so we would not be charged for loss of them (ours were fine for the 10 days). Also to keep towel cards safe as there read less

The resort is simply amazing. In just one week we were able to snorkel in the large wonderful cenote on site, enjoy scuba diving through Scubalibre, play in a water park (the slides were so fun), lounge by the pools and ocean, enjoy spectacular shows (the Lady Gaga show in particular blew us away), eat both a la carte and buffet style in upscale and beautiful restaurants, and see all sorts of exotic wildlife. Everyone at the resort was very friendly, from the many International guests and the staff. Even our room was wonderful; we parents enjoyed a comfortable king bed while our two kids slept in bunk beds, and the view of the jungle from our windows took our breath away when we first saw it. The jungle feel, the wildlife and the cenotes are beautiful. The monkeys coming down to take a banana from your hand is amazing. We even had one with her baby on our balcony. Lots of raccoons too. The baby ones are so sweet. They are everywhere and will steal from your bag if there’s anything food related. My husband and I were in the adult only section. The pool was lovely for a late swim after a busy day out. My only criticism is pretty much as with most all inclusive. Drinks not great snd served in plastic cups. I can’t bear drinking out of anything other than a nice glass!!! You could sometimes get a glass at the main bar in the lobby or the sports bar. Food in read less

Jose Garza at Sandos Caracol Jose made our week. His attention to detail customer service skills are extraordinary. Without him this would’ve been an average stay, but he made it something special. Every resort should have a Jose or have him train the concierge‘s at every resort.
